Sid Detritus I: The man at the market

Post by Sid DeTritus »

The red had lit the horizon for days now, letting little light through to navigate the town. All around were people providing prayers and gifts to their deities. All around were people scrounging up their hope. Sid raised a brow as a man preaching "the end is near" ran out in front of his carriage. Sid slowed the carriage enough to let the man pass, but not quite enough to avoid scaring him out of the way. Sid was unmoved by his surroundings, like any other week, he was at the market picking up supplies for his family.

The market was bare, just as he expected it to be, but as he had also anticipated, he would still be able to get what he came for. For it was the third week of the month and it was this time, every month, that a lone sailor would furl up the sails and and sell off as much of his catch as he could manage.
There he was propped in the corner of his stall repeatedly tossing an apple in the air. Sid respected this man, he could always be depended on to show up when expected. Sid wasn't sure if the man was brave, or just a fool, but this man was the only one he'd seen all day who, too, was unafflicted by the speculations of the red sky. Not only this but Sid secretly admired his unhabitual assortments of food items, and it was that reason Sid never missed this week to head to market.

The man squinted, flipping through the gold coins and tossing them about as Sid loaded up his carriage. Taking a coconut with him to eat at the reigns, Sid turns to the man, "See you next week, Sherman".
The man nodded and asked "Heads or tails" as he flips a coin into the air ritualistically. "Heads" states Sid, and it was.
"Ah, on this season there lies good fortune for Sid" the man says as he pockets the coin.
