Brothers

Post by Dista »

The streets of New Haven lay empty as ever, completely motionless under the dark storm-ridden sky. It seemed that every house in the village had been deserted for quite some time now; for sale signs hanging on each entrance, spider webs cover the majority of the window frames both inside and out. The darkness began to pour from the streets through the houses, except for one just next to the bank.

Felix had just landed on the shores outside of Britain; the sandy beach was moistened from the storm that just blew through not even an hour before. Felix turned to the captain and offered him his hand to thank him for the journey. As quickly as he set foot onto the sand, the ship had left and disappeared from sight. Felix turned towards the West and followed the signs that marked the path to New Haven.

For once Felix was separated from his brother Ajax as he had arrived a night or two in advance to make the necessary reservations to where they would be staying. The last message Felix had received was just before the storm had begun out on the sea; it was from Ajax. The letter was written in what looked like scribbles and some drawings. Felix knew immediately the letter had been crafted by his brother Ajax. Having some troubles making out the penmanship, he finally managed to piece a few words together which read: “Me WeST iN NeW HAveN HouSeS MaNy MeeT BaNkr”. These directions were the only thing that Felix had to guide him.

Felix followed the signs West through the mountains, within just a few minutes he reached the streets of New Haven. He made his way further West into the village until he spotted the bank. Upon Greeting the guards outside Felix asked them if they had seen a broad shouldered man pass by the area recently. Unfortunately the guards were of no assistance since they had just arrived a few minutes earlier to take over guard for the evening and night. Felix entered the bank to find a very potent scent; to his right he saw his younger brother Ajax sprawled over the benches asleep.

Ajax was covered in dirt and sweat; he smelled like he hadn’t washed in days. Felix held his cloak over his face because the scent was so horrid. He made his way nearer to the broad shouldered man he disgustingly called his brother. Immediately Felix removed his gloves and gave Ajax a swift jolt on the face. Ajax sprung awake and his hand latched onto the gloves. Before Felix could say a word or even crack a smile Ajax stood up and locked him in a bear hug. Felix felt as though he would never breathe again, although as soon as he did he was more than happy to have avoided the scent of his brother for those few seconds.

The Ferrox brothers had gathered themselves out of the bank and searched the village for adequate shelter. What they found was the inn near the end of the main path; the inn seemed rather empty and silence reaped through the halls. The floor boards creeked and crocked as Felix walked forward into the dim entrance way. The winds were rather strong that evening after the storm blew through; Ajax followed through the door fumbling with his hat to keep it on top of his head. Ajax swung the door shut behind him; the wind howled outside straight down the street crashing into the walls of the inn.

Inside it was warm and dry; Felix set his lute on the table and rummaged through his pack for some gold. Ajax, still filthy and rancid, wiped his eyes clean and approached the Innkeep along side brother Felix. They proceeded to gain access to one of the rooms and sleep very soundly through the entire nights' storm.

The following day the brothers had awoken to a new world at the foot of the door, an entirely new world to explore. They headed towards Britain, stopping off at the local Mushroom market along the way. Felix and Ajax then arrived in Britain; after arranging with some local renters for an inn room to stay in the brothers started hard at work and began to search the streets of Britain for a house. Ajax spent his days out of town training his weaponry skills and gaining strength. Felix stayed within the town playing his lute and planning for the future.

This future was the entire purpose of his coming to these lands. An entire week passed as the brothers accumulated any last gold coin they could manage. Felix found a nice cabin just on water's edge for just the right price. Settling in went as quickly as the purchase; Felix remained calm and rather silent sitting against the wall to the side. He mumbled somethings under his breath as if in a conversation. His eyes opened in a relaxed fashion and focused towards his brother.

"He has guided us here, at these times our option is to remain focused on searching the Truth. We are protected by him and stabalized within this community. Plans are to proceed." spoke Felix.

Ajax gave an approving nod and joined Felix in a bow. The words were followed by a short silence and then the brothers continued on working collecting whatever they could manage to come up with. Felix filled the streets of Britain with his musical energies, searching for Truth within this corrupt world.

Felix sat down on a stump in the swamp. He muttered to himself as he peeled the bark off the stump beneath him... Tears began to soak his cheeks. His younger brother Ajax had died a fool. Guardsman John had warned everyone not to enter the Covetous mines, especially not alone. Felix didn't understand the reasons behind his brothers abrupt actions to leave his side and barbarically attempt to bombard the Covetous mines by himself...

Felix had entered the mines in search of his brother after reading the note young Ajax had scribbled the night before...

"ME B A hERo to MoRo."

All Felix found on his search was Ajax's rotting corpse. Felix ran from the mines, out through the forest and into the swamp where he now sat on this stump, hunched over and alone. Ajax was gone forever... Life would not be the same. But the quest for the Truth of this world would go on without Ajax. The sun was now setting behind the trees. Felix wiped his tears away with his black cloak. He grabbed his lute and began to strum a tune as he slowly walked away into the darkening forest.
